International Research and PracticeConference “Historical, Cultural and Scientific Heritage of AstronomicalObservatories: Formation of the Outstanding Universal Value of Sites”

The Organizing Committee of the International Research and Practice Conference “Historical, Cultural and Scientific Heritage of Astronomical Observatories: Formation of the Outstanding Universal Value of Sites” invites you to take part in its proceedings. The forum will be held on December 2-7, 2019 in Kazan at the premises of Kazan Federal University and the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan.

The International Research and PracticeConference “Historical, Cultural and Scientific Heritage of AstronomicalObservatories: Formation of the Outstanding Universal Value of Sites” is organized as part of the “Astronomy & World Heritage” Thematic Initiative (Astronomy and World Heritage) of the UNESCO World Heritage Center, the purpose of which is to identify and preserve monuments and sites connected with the astronomy and having world historical and cultural value.

The Republic of Tatarstan makes systematic efforts to popularize monuments of astronomical heritage. A Museum of Natural History was established in the Kazan Kremlin and has thematic astronomy halls(2008). The Planetarium of Kazan Federal University was opened on the territory of the Astronomical Observatory named after V.P. Engelhardt (2013). There are regularly held specialized exhibitions and scientific forums.

In 2009, Kazan hosted the “AstroKazan-2009” – Multidisciplinary Astronomical Congressunder the auspices of the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Commission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federationfor UNESCO, with the support of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research. Within the framework of the Congress, there was held the International Conference “Astronomy and World Heritage: Through Time and Continents”, which set the task to include astronomical observatories of Kazan University into the UNESCO World Heritage List. The initiative of Kazan Federal University was supported by UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokovain 2017.

The mission of the conference is to establish a link between Science and Culture towards global recognition of the monuments and sites of the Russian Federation connected with astronomical research, and to discuss the possibility of including them in the world cultural heritagelist.

The conference agenda includes the following areas:

  • The History and the Activity of the Astronomical Observatories in Russia and the World;
  • Observatories as Scientific, Educational and Cultural Centers;
  • Updating Scientific Heritage of Astronomical Observatories. Practical Aspects;
  • Architecture and Historical and Urban Planning Landscape of Astronomical Observatories: the Functionality of the Architectural Form and Development Experience;
  • History and Originof Kazan University Observatories and Planetarium.

The working languages of the conference are Tatar, Russian, English, and French.

To participate in the conference, the applications forms must be submitted before September 15, 2019 by e-mail: vsemirnaya_astronomiya@inbox.ru. The articles are accepted until November 1, 2019.
