Archaeological studies in the Chuy region of the Kyrgyz Republic in 2022

Within the framework of the implementation of the State program of the Republic of Tatarstan “Preservation of the national identity of the Tatar people (2020-2024)” and the international project “Medieval cities on transcontinental trade routes of Eurasia: urban centers of the Chuy Valley and the Middle Volga regions”, supported by a grant of  the International Institute of Central Asian Studies (MITSAI, Samarkand), the Institute of Archaeology of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences together with the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnology named after B. Jamgerchinov of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic has been carried out archaeological excavations on the territory of the Chuy region of the Kyrgyz Republic since September 12, 2022.

Within the framework of the project it is planned to study one of the important directions of the spread of medieval cities in the central part of the Chuy Valley – the Ak-Sui branch of the Silk Road. The sites of Burana, Ken-Bulun, Sokuluk, Sretenskoye, Novopokrovka-2 and Telek were chosen as objects for study. The main focus of the project was to be on the Telek settlement of the Moscow district of the Chuy region. However, due to the opposition of local residents who opposed the excavations near the cemetery, located on top of the monument, the work had to be moved to another site. At present, excavations have begun at the Ken-Bulun settlement, located in the Ysyk-Ata district of the Chuy region The expedition has made 2 excavations with area of 120 m2, which will allow to study the wall structures of the building on the citadel of the settlement, as well as, presumably, to explore the industrial zone. The excavations at the monument will continue in 2023.

In the summer of 2022 within the framework of the international project were carried out excavations at the Bilyar settlement in the Alekseevskoye district of the Republic of Tatarstan. Archaeologists and students from the Kyrgyz Republic took part in the research. (Archaeological study of the Bilyar settlement in 2022 (archtat.ru )
