Archaeological excavations began on the territory of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve

On July 1, 2023 specialists of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences continued their long-term studies on the territory of the Bolgar State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve.

First-year students of the Institute of International Relations KFU take part in the work of the Bolgar Archaeological Expedition in addition to the staff of the Institute of Archaeology.

In this field season the expedition continued to study the Bolgar settlement fortifications of the pre-Mongol period. The excavation with an area of 150 m2 is laid in the north-eastern part of the ancient capital of Volga Bolgaria, not far from the famous historical and architectural site “Black Chamber”. The excavations, undertaken in this area in 2021, brought interesting material of the XII-early XIII centuries, in particular the remains of the defensive moat of that time and gave reasons to believe that current year studies will enrich scientists’ knowledge about the life of the fortified urban settlement in the early period of its history, socio-economic, political and ethno-cultural situation in the Volga-Kama region in the Middle Ages.
