The exhibition “Cities do not disappear. The history of Ukek in the findings …” in the Kazan Kremlin

On April 1, 2024, the opening of the exhibition “Cities do not disappear. The history of Ukek in the findings …” took place in the exhibition hall of the Museum of History of Statehood of the Tatar People and the Republic of Tatarstan in the Kazan Kremlin as part of a series of scientific events dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the A.Kh. Khalikov Institute of Archaeology of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences and the 95th anniversary of Alfred Khasanovich Khalikov.
The exhibition is organized by the Museum-Reserve “Kazan Kremlin”, the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences, the Historical Park “My History” (Saratov), the Saratov Regional Museum of Local History, the Engels Museum of Local History with the assistance and active participation of the Public Organization “Regional Tatar National Cultural Autonomy of the Saratov Oblast”.
The opening of the exhibition was attended by N.A. Makarov, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician-Secretary of the Division of Historical and Philological Sciences RAS, Director of the Institute of Archaeology RAS, N.N. Kradin, Director of the Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnology Far Eastern Branch RAS (Vladivostok), R.G. Gagkuyev, Executive Director of the “History of the Fatherland” Foundation, A.V. Sirenov, Director of the Saint-Petersburg Institute of History RAS, I.F. Popova, Director of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts RAS, A.V. Polyakov, Director of the Institute for the History of Material Culture RAS, A.Ye. Zagrebin, Acting Director of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology RAS, V.V. Maiko, Director of the Institute of Archaeology of the Crimea RAS, A.G. Sitdikov, Director of the A. Kh. Khalikov Institute of Archaeology TAS.
The exhibition is dedicated to the history of Ukek, one of the largest cities of the Golden Horde, founded in the middle of the XIII century on the bank of the Volga River nearby modern Saratov.
The exhibition presents more than 300 items from the collections of the Saratov Regional Museum of Local History, the Saratov Historical Park, the Engels Museum of Local History, the Museum-Reserve “Kazan Kremlin”, reflecting the whole spectrum of urban life of Ukek in its diversity: architecture and metallurgy, bone curving and jewelry, pottery and trade, connecting the Mediterranean with China, samples of medieval weaving and the silver of the mint.
Archaeological excavations on the territory of the settlement are conducted by the A. Kh. Khalikov Institute of Archaeology TAS as a part of the State program “Preservation of the national identity of the Tatar people”.
The exhibition runs until May 7, 2024 at the address: Kazan Kremlin, Museum of History of Statehood of the Tatar People and the Republic of Tatarstan (next to the Syuyumbike Tower, on the ground floor).
