International conference “Conservation and museumification of archaeological wood and organic materials”
On November 1, 2022, the opening of the International conference “Conservation and museumification of archaeological wood and organic materials” took place in the building of the National Library of the Republic of Tatarstan with the participation of State Counselor of the Republic of Tatarstan M.Sh. Shaimiev, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences N.A. Makarov, ICOM Russia Executive O.M. Chistanova, Executive Director of the Fund “History of the Fatherland”, Chairman of the Board of the Russian Historical Society K.I. Mogilevsky, Director of the Institute of International Relations of Kazan (Volga region) Federal University R.R. Khairutdinov, Director of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.H. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences A.G. Sitdikov, academician of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Sh.M. Mustafayev.
The conference is attended by more than 100 specialists from Russian regions, as well as Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Syria, Mongolia, Senegal, Belarus, China, India, Azerbaijan.
On the first day of the conference the opening of the exhibition “Wet archaeology” and the presentation of the scientific edition of the catalogue “Museum of the archaeological wood”, prepared by specialists of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.H. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences, took place. Within the framework of the International conference M.Sh. Shaimiev met with the delegation of the Russian Historical Society at the Kazan Kremlin. The participants discussed issues related to the development of historical education in secondary and higher school and, in general, the national historical science. After that, in the Imperial hall of the Kazan Federal University, a lecture was held by the Chairman of the Board of the Russian Historical Society K.I. Mogilevsky, dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Russian Historical Society, which was reestablished in 2012. The lecture was attended by students and teachers of the university.
The international conference will continue for three days. Specialists of various fields (restorers, archaeologists, biologists, physicists, museum staff, etc.) will discuss issues related to the study of the wet cultural layer with the conservation and exhibition of archaeological items made of wood, birch bark, bark, leather and other organic materials.
The conference is the result of many years of work that was carried out in the Republic of Tatarstan on the implementation of the program for the revival of the island-city Sviyazhsk and the ancient city Bolgar. The archaeological work carried out on the island Sviyazhsk allowed us to study a unique wet archaeological layer and create the only in Russia Museum of the archaeological wood “Tatar Slobodka”, which is a part of the structure of the Museum-Reserve “Island-City Sviyazhsk”.
