In memory of Valery Valentinovich Nikitin

On May 26, 2024 Russian science suffered a heavy loss. At the 85th year of life passed away Doctor of History, Honored Scientist of the Republic of Mari El, laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Mari El named after M.N. Yantemir Valery Valentinovich Nikitin.

For many years Valery Valentinovich was the head of the Department of Archaeology of the Mari Research Institute of Language, Literature and History named after V.M. Vasiliev. He is one of the most experienced specialists of the field archaeology. He discovered, studied and mapped more than 1000 archeological sites of different periods of ancient history in the Republic of Mari El. He is the author of more than 230 scientific works, including 13 monographs. His proceedings are dedicated to the study of the Stone and Bronze Ages, the issues of social and economic organization of primal communities.

Valery Valentinovich paid much attention to the training of young specialists, actively participated in popularization of scientific knowledge among the population.

The Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences expresses deep condolences to relatives, friends and colleagues of Valery Valentinovich. The bright memory of him, as a remarkable scientist and man, will remain in our hearts forever.
