The seventh and final volume is the first experience of an academic study of the late Middle Ages and early modern period. It is notable for its novelty both in the structure of the articles and in the stated chronology and coverage of the territory described. This work for the first time presents materials on the Volga-Ural region, received as a result of large-scale studies of sites of the XVI–XVII centuries. First of all, these are Kazan, Sviyazhsk, Cheboksary, Tsaryovokokshaysk, Kozmodemyansk, etc. The structure of the text is based on the cultural horizons of the development of the region during the Tatar khanates period in the Volga river area after the disintegration of the Ulus of Jochi and the formation of the Russian state.
