Archaeological studies on the shore of the Kuibyshev reservoir in the buffer zone of the UNESCO site “Bolgar historical and archaeological complex”
In autumn 2022 specialists of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.H. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences carried out security and rescue research works on the territory of the archaeological complex “Syukeyevsky Vzvoz”, located on the shore of the Kuibyshev reservoir in the Kamskoye Ustye district of the Republic of Tatarstan. Archaeological studies were carried out within the framework of the program “Monitoring of the buffer zone of the UNESCO World cultural heritage site “Bolgar historical and archaeological complex (archaeological heritage sites)”.
The territory of the archaeological complex “Syukeyevsky Vzvoz” is intensively destroyed by the waters of the Kuibyshev reservoir. To preserve the cultural layer of the site an excavation of 100 m2 was made. As a result of the works carried out, a cultural layer with a thickhess of 0.4-1.6 m was revealed. The planographic analysis of cultural layers made it possible to identify four objects (three of the Golden Horde time, one of the Stone Age). In the most ancient object, dating from the Stone Age (the final of Paleolithic-Mesolithic periods), various items made of flint were found, as well as flint production waste. Items made of iron and pieces of ceramic ware were found in the objects of the Golden Horde period.
It is necessary to continue archaeological studies on the territory of the archaeological complex “Syukeyevsky Vzvoz” because of the intensity of destruction of the shoreline by the waters of the reservoir.
