Archaeological studies of the medieval necropolis on the territory of the Uvek settlement in Saratov region in 2023
In June 2023, the Institute of Archaeology named after A.H. Khalikov Tatarstan Academy of Sciences with assistance and active participation of Public Organization “Regional Tatar National and Cultural Autonomy of Saratov region” and SACI “Historical Park “My History” (Saratov) continued long-term archaeological studies of Uvek settlement (Golden Horde city of Ukek) situated in the southern outskirts of Saratov. The works were conducted within the framework of the state program of the Republic of Tatarstan “Preservation of the national identity of the Tatar people (2020-2025)”.
The archaeological expedition carried out research in the southwestern part of the site, on the so-called “Mamayev Shikhan” or Mamai’s hillock. The excavation of more than 100 m2 was joined to 2021 excavation. 10 more burials with Muslim burial rites were studied in 2023 excavation. In the burial pits skeletonы wуку placed into wooden construction, stretched out on the back with the right side turned. There were no burial goods. An interesting peculiarity of the burial ground is the presence of a wooden covering over the burial. Besides, basement and part of the aboveground residential building of the first third of the XX century, as well as a trench of the early 40s of the XX century from the anti-aircraft unit were revealed at the excavation.
