Archaeological studies in the Volgograd region

In September 2023, the expedition of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences started archaeological studies on the territory of the cultural heritage object of federal significance  “Ruins of Saray-Berke (New Saray) near the village of Tsarev in the Leninsk district of the Volgograd region”. These works, conducted by the Institute of Archaeology since 2021 as a part of the State Program of the Republic of Tatarstan “Preservation of the national identity of the Tatar people” are a continuation of the study of one of the largest Golden Horde settlements. The studies are carried out under the supervision of Doctor of History, Academician of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences Ayrat G. Sitdikov. The specialists of Mari State University also take part in the work of the expedition.

The pottery-making workshop is currently being studied, which produced kashin and red-clay glazed tiles for decorating public, elite residential and burial structures.

These studies will allow us to reconstruct in perspective the life of the medieval city, to show the development level of pottery production and architectural and construction practices.
