Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences noted the work of Tatarstan archaeologists
On the Day of Russian Science, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Nikolay Andreevich Makarov gave an interview in which he highly appreciated the work of Tatarstan archaeologists, in particular, their experience in preserving and museumification of medieval wooden buildings. According to him, the example of the Museum of archaeological wood in Sviyazhsk, created by the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences, demonstrates that even under existing conditions it is possible to successfully preserve unique samples of ancient wooden architecture.
Nikolay Makarov emphasized that until recently the conservation and display of wooden buildings from the cultural layers of cities were considered practically impossible due to the long term and high cost of the process. However, it was the pilot project in Sviyazhsk that demonstrated the effectiveness of the new approach to the museum presentation of medieval heritage.
Today, the issue of museumification and further scientific processing of archaeological materials is particularly acute: the gap between the number of new finds and what scientists manage to publish is rapidly growing. However, the positive experience demonstrated in Sviyazhsk gives hope that key historical and cultural monuments will not be lost, and thanks to the joint efforts of archaeologists, museums and scientific institutions, such as the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences, the image of medieval Russia will become more accessible and understandable for the modern visitor.
