Knowledge exchange: lecture by A.V. Engovatova at the Institute of Archaeology of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences

In August 2025, the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov TAS hosted a lecture by Asya Viktorovna Engovatova, Deputy Director and Head of the Department for the preservation of archaeological heritage at the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, PhD in History. The lecture was titled: “Medieval mass graves in ancient Russian cities (based on excavation materials from the Institute of Archaeology RAS).”

The lecture was organized as part of an internal scientific knowledge exchange and became a significant event for the institute’s staff. In her presentation, Asya Viktorovna presented the results of research related to archaeological layers that reflect the destruction of cities in the 13th century. Particular attention was paid to materials from collective burials discovered in Yaroslavl, as well as modern methodologies for analyzing such archaeological phenomena.

The lecturer provided a detailed overview of the approaches currently in use, including stratigraphic methods, digital documentation, 3D modeling, comparative analysis of materials from different regions, and interdisciplinary techniques for interpreting mass graves.

Institute staff highlighted not only the lecture’s high scientific caliber but also its value as a forum for exchanging experiences and research practices. Such meetings contribute to the development of the professional community, open up opportunities for new collaborative research, and strengthen cooperation between scientific centers.
