International practical workshop on the nomination “Silk Road: Volga-Caspian corridor”

Aktau hosted the first practical workshop “Silk Road: Volga-Caspian corridor” within the UNESCO and Japanese Funds-in-Trust (Japan FiT) Project “Support Silk Roads World Heritage Nomination(s) process ” (Phase III).

The event was organized by the UNESCO World Heritage Center (Paris),  NGO “QazaqGeography” (Astana), the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (Samarkand) with the support of the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for UNESCO, the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the administration of Mangystau region of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The seminar was attended by specialists of scientific institutions from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Russian Federation, Iran, Japan, Great Britain and Italy. The Institute of Archaeology of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences was represented by Deputy Director for Science, Candidate of Historical Sciences R.R. Sattarov.

During the event, the stages of modern documentation of historical and cultural heritage sites, related to the Silk Road were discussed, and the necessity to keep making an inventory, working on internal comparative analysis, identifying the potential for Outstanding Universal Value and collecting documentation for historical and cultural heritage sites within the Caspian region was underscored. These sites form an integral part of the Serial Transnational Nomination “Silk Road: Volga-Caspian corridor”
