Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences took part in the final board meeting of the Committee of the Republic of Tatarstan for the Protection of Cultural Heritage Sites
23 January 2026, the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences took part in the final board meeting of the Committee of the Republic of Tatarstan for the Protection of Cultural Heritage Sites. As part of the event, the institute presented an exhibition dedicated to the main results of archaeological research and rescue operations in 2025.
During the reporting year, the institute’s specialists conducted resea
rch at 170 archaeological sites in Tatarstan. Rescue excavations and archaeological observations were carried out over an area of more than 3,000 sq. m, as well as surveys at 44 sites in the Spassk, Chistopol, Alkeyevo, Nurlat, and Laishevo districts.
During the work, the boundaries of 38 cultural heritage sites were clarified, and 4 new archaeological sites dating back to the Volga Bolgaria period and earlier epochs were discovered. Notifications about all discovered sites were sent to the authorized heritage protection bodies.
The exhibition featured artifacts reflecting the region’s centuries-old history. Special attention was drawn to unique finds from the 9th–14th centuries from the the Bolgar and Bilyar settlements: fragments of glassware, glazed ceramics of local and imported production, amber pieces, jewelry made of semi-precious stones, household items, bone-carving crafts, and imported gray clay spherical cones. These materials demonstrate the richness of the material culture and the developed trade links of the Middle Volga region in the Middle Ages.
A separate section of the exhibition was dedicated to the preservation and rescue work carried out in the historic center of Kazan in 2025, where items reflecting the urban culture of the 18th to early 20th centuries were discovered.
The institute’s participation in the board and the presented exhibition clearly demonstrated the scale and high scientific significance of the archaeological research conducted in the Republic of Tatarstan.
