Happy Birthday to Dzhamil Gabdrakhimovich Mukhametshin!

Today, August 2, 2025, Dzhamil Gabdrakhimovich Mukhametshin celebrates his 79th birthday. A historian, numismatist, and epigrapher originally from the village of Bolshoye Nurkeyevo, his academic journey began in the late 1960s. His passion for Bolgar heritage defined his entire subsequent career.
For nearly thirty years, he headed the Bolgar State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve, serving as its first director and effectively transforming the complex into one of the key “laboratory sites” for studying the medieval history of the Volga region. The museum still fondly remembers the years when its exhibitions were assembled under the personal guidance of the scholar.
Mukhametshin’s scholarly output includes over three hundred articles and monographs, ranging from catalogs of epitaphs to studies of the rare coins of Ali-Dervish. He initiated the multi-volume series Tatar Epigraphic Tradition, now an essential reference for fellow medievalists.
Dzhamil Gabdrakhimovich continues to work as a senior research fellow at the Department of medieval archaeology of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences. He consults on field expeditions and actively contributes to the media – his latest major interview on Bolgar coinage was published in February 2024.
