Archaeological studies in the Yalchiki district of the Chuvash Republic
From June 1 to June 15, 2023, archaeological studies on the Bolshaya Tayaba ancient settlement in the Yalchiki district of the Chuvash Republic were continued within the framework of the joint research plan of the Chuvash State Institute of the Humanities and the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences.
Specialists from two research centers have been conducting joint archaeological studies on this site for the fifth field season. The purpose of the archaeological works in 2023 was to define more exactly the construction of a Bronze Age residential building and to study the defensive fortifications of this Volga Bolgaria medieval settlement. The total area of the works was about 160 sq.m
The log dwelling of the late Bronze Age with an area of about 100 sq.m was almost completely explored. It should be noted that this is the first dwelling on the north-western periphery of the Srubnaya cultural and historical community completely studied.
Excavations were made in the western part of the settlement to study the defensive fortifications of the Bolshaya Tayaba settlement of the pre-Mongolian period. The excavation revealed the remains of defensive fortifications in the form of stockade on the outside of the mound, large vertical poles on the inside and the remains of burnt log cabins in the central part of the rampart. The finds in the excavation are represented by a large number of Bolgarian ceramics, items made of iron, fragments of spheroconical vessels, etc., as well as numerous bone remains.
In the next field season studies on the Bolshaya Tayaba settlement will be continued.
