Archaeological sites studied in the Nizhnekamsk reservoir area

In the 2023 field season, the specialists of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences continued survey works at the archaeological sites in the negative impact zone of the Nizhnekamsk reservoir.

In the zone of the Nizhnekamsk reservoir in the Mendeleyevsk and Agryz districts of the Republic of Tatarstan ancient settlement sites of Malinovka I and II, Mukovo II, “Tikhiye Gory” were examined, small excavations were carried out on the territory of the Pyany Bor burial ground in the village of Krasny Bor. The works were aimed at clarifying information on the territory of cultural heritage objects, the thickness of the cultural layer and the current condition of the archaeological monuments.

In addition to the archaeological sites located in the Nizhnekamsk reservoir area, the monuments on the right bank of the Kama, located in the Yelabuga district, were examined. During the work, it was found that at the Kotlovka I ancient settlement the slopes had been terraced, which resulted in damage to the cultural layer of the monument. Lugovoy campsite and Lugovoy burial ground are completely built up with houses. Svinogorye and Yelabuga (Chertovo) settlements, the Ananyino burial ground were examined, and small archaeological works were carried out to localize the “Otarka” unfortified settlement.

Annual survey, monitoring of cultural heritage objects in the impact zone of  reservoirs are a planned scientific topic of the Institute’s work and allow to establish their condition in time and take necessary measures for their preservation.
