Archaeological research of the Bolgar ancient settlement

During the 2025 field season, the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences continued long-term studies at the Bolgar settlement. Special attention is paid to the study of the southern section of the pre-Mongol defensive fortifications and objects of the Golden Horde period located in the central part of the site.

Research is being conducted on a 144-square-meter area in the north-eastern part of the site, near the historical and architectural monument — the «Black Chamber». Scientific staff of the Institute of Archeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences and students-historians of the Ural Federal University (Yekaterinburg) who are undergoing archaeological practice participate in the archaeological expedition.

The results of the research will allow for a more complete understanding of the fortifications of Bolgar in the pre-Mongol period, the life of the city in the Golden Horde period, as well as of the socio-economic, political and ethnocultural situation in the Volga-Kama region in the Middle Ages.
