Shakirov Zufar Gumarovich

Senior Research Associate of the Medieval Archaeology Department of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences

Shakirov Zufar Gumarovich (September 7, 1977, Kazan) – Archaeologist, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Expert in the Medieval Archaeology of the Volga-Ural Region. Senior Research Associate of the Medieval Archaeology Department of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences. He graduated from the Historical Department of Kazan State Pedagogical University (History, Teacher of History and History of Religions) in 2000. In 2000-2004, he studied at the postgraduate school at the National Center for Archaeological Research of the Sh. Mardzhani Institute of History of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences under the supervision of F.Sh. Khuzin. From 2000 to 2005, he worked as a specialist and leading specialist of the Archaeological Surveillance Department of the Office for the Protection and Use of Historical and Cultural Monuments of Kazan. In 2005, he became a Research Associate at the Museum of Archaeology of the Republic of Tatarstan, and since 2006 he worked as a Research Associate and Acting Academic Secretary at the National Center for Archaeological Research of Sh. Mardzhani Institute of History of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences. In 2012 he defended a Candidate’s Thesis “The Neighbouring Area of Bilyar in the 10th-15th cc. (Settlement Structure, Resource Potential)” with a specialty “07.00.06 – Archaeology”. In 2014-2015, he was a Senior Research Associate at the Department of Medieval Archaeology, and a Scientific Secretary of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences.  From late 2015 to 2018 he was Head of the Medieval Archaeology Department of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences.

Zufar Gumarovich has been a member of archaeological expeditions at Bilyar settlement and in its neighbouring area since 1996, and participated in excavations at a number of sites in the historical center of Kazan, Alekseevsky, Arsky, Zelenodolsky Districts of the Republic of Tatarstan, and the Island of Sviyazhsk. Since 2008, he worked as an expert in cultural values – archaeological materials. He is the author of over 100 publications.

Since 2012, he has worked as an Assistant, Associate Professor (concurrently) at the Institute of International Relations, History and Oriental Studies of the Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University.

Member of the Academic Council of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov, Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan, Expert Council of the Bilyar Historical-Architectural and Natural Museum-Reserve, Expert Stock Commission of the Museum of Archaeology of the Republic of Tatarstan.

Academic interests: archaeology and history of Volga Bolgaria, the Golden Horde and the Kazan Khanate, archaeology of the modern period.
