Gubaidullin Ayrat Maratovich
Chief Research Associate of the Medieval Archaeology Department of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences
Gubaidullin Ayrat Maratovich (January 4, 1965, Kazan) – Archaeologist, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Expert in Medieval Archaeology of the Volga-Ural Region. Senior Research Associate at the Medieval Archaeology Department of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences. He graduated from the Faculty of Historical of the Kazan State University in 1990. After graduation in 1990, he entered the full-time post-graduate school of the G. Ibragimov Institute of Language, Literature and Art of the Kazan Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (consequently the G. Ibragimov Institute of Language, Literature and Art of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences) at the Archaeology Department. In 1993, he completed the postgraduate studies under the supervision of A.Kh. Khalikov. From 1993 to 1994 he was Head of the Archaeology and Restoration Department at the Bolgar State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve. In 1994, he was employed as a Research associate at the Archaeology Department of the the G. Ibragimov Institute of Language, Literature and Art of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences. In June 1996, he defended his candidate’s thesis “Fortification of Volga Bolgaria Settlements” in Ufa. From 1995 to 2013 he worked at the National Center for Archaeological Research of the Sh. Mardzhani Institute of History of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences. From 2014 until the present day, he has worked at the Medieval Archaeology Department of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences. He is the author of over 100 scientific publications, including one monograph and three books. Since the period of studying at the university (since 1988), he has studied archaeological monuments located in the territory of various regions of Tatarstan in the impact area of Kuibyshev reservoir, explored several dozens of medieval settlements, such as Bolgar, Kuralovskoye (Starokuibyshevskoe), Kominternovskoye II, Challynskoye, Kamaevskoye, Elabuzhskoye, Kashan I, and has also worked in the Kazan Kremlin.
Academic interests: ancient and medieval fortification of the peoples of the Ural-Volga region, urban settlements of Volga Bolgaria, Bolgar Ulus of the Golden Horde and the Kazan Khanate.
